May 22, 2017 Garden Bus Trip: May Flowers

March 16, 2017

Join DIG IT! and the Rollin’ Garden Party Bus as we visit two celebrated gardens in the Hudson Valley on Monday, May 22. We’ll have guided tours at Stonecrop Gardens and an exceptional private garden with lunch on our own in the historic village of Cold Spring-on-Hudson. And there’s plenty of room under the bus for rare plant shopping treasures. Get the bus at either Rockaway Townsquare Mall, Rockaway, New Jersey or Woodbury Commons Mall, Woodbury, New York.

STOP 1 Stonecrop Gardens, Cold Spring, New York: We’ll enjoy a 2-hour guided tour of this 12-acre public garden, once the home of Frank Cabot, founder of The Garden Conservancy. It includes alpine ledges, a woodland garden of wild flowers and bulbs, a gravel garden that leads down to a wisteria pavilion and rock ledge, a bamboo grove, enclosed English-style flower garden with bulb and perennials with a framework of shrubs, an alpine house and pit house with choice bulbs and alpines, raised stone beds, fern allee´, a conservatory that seems to float on a frog pond surrounded by yellow magnolias and petasites, and so much more. Systematic order beds are a special delight with approximately 40 beds once laid out by plant Order, then Family based on Lynnean theory. The beds now contain 80 Plant Families based on genetics. Rare plants abound among the diverse gardens and alpine houses. Small alpines and bulbs, grown from Stonecrop’s mother plants, are for sale. See a bit of it here!

STOP 2 Lunch on our own in Cold Spring, New York. Have lunch and take a walk in this historic Hudson River town with time to explore Main Street shops aplenty amid 19th-century Colonial and Victorian architecture. Choose from eateries galore from cafes to haute cuisine. A quick jaunt down side streets reveals small gardens and architectural details of old homes. Have a look here. A restaurant list will be provided upon registration.

STOP 3 Private Garden: This garden, done with the expertise of Patrick Chasse´, has been featured in many magazines and books including The New Garden Paradise, Great Private Gardens of the World, Its seven acres include a stumperie garden, a pond with 500 lotus and a “pond house,” 300-plus mountain laurel, 72 peonies, 200 herbaceous peonies, a cactus garden, hundreds of hellebores, arisamae of various types, rare trees, 25 varieties of magnolias, a giant bamboo garden, four greenhouses with rare tropical plants and a large vegetable garden. Mixed borders flow throughout and contain indigenous plants as well as species and rare cultivars, A dramatic lookout of glass and wood provides lovely views of the property and its lake.

Nothing is handicapped accessible. Terrain may vary and includes hills. Please, no sandals or heels. Prepare to do lots of walking.
