Garden Tour: Pennsylvania Sampler

by DIG-IT

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and DIG IT! Magazine, the Art & Science of East Coast Gardening, are teaming up again this spring to bring you another exceptional garden experience on Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 9-5. So, sit back and leave the driving to us as you enjoy a day of gardens, history and art in eastern Pennsylvania.

Visit two private gardens, one a bastion of American horticulture, the other a collector of American folk and outsider art. Shop at a nationally known (thanks to Martha) specialty nursery with themed display gardens and country gift shop, and lunch in historic downtown Doylestown.

An Art Collectors Garden, Easton
This country estate garden was designed around a large (perhaps the largest in the country) collection of American folk art and outsider art. Visitors will enjoy this six-acre hilltop property with two ponds, one drenched in lotus and its own Stonehenge, a reflecting pool garden, a secret garden designed by M. Night Shyamalan staff, formal and informal plantings among sculpture, dramatic views of the Pennsylvania countryside, a 1700s farmhouse and big red barn surrounded by art and gardens, Adirondack gazebo, and a terrace garden with potted flowering plants. In the woodland surrounding the estate, large urns burst with flowers and stone slabs lead upward to an arbor. Says the owner: “I try to make the outside as beautiful as the inside.”

The “Ralph Lauren” farmhouse and property were featured in Architectural Digest. The property was designed by award-winning landscape architect David Fierabend, owner of Groundswell Design Group in Princeton. Fierabend has also won awards from Best of Philly, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and for his public installation Quark Park. Fierabend and staff will be on hand to answer questions about the design and plants.

The secret garden, with formal plantings complementing sculpture and a glass mural, was designed by staff of M. Night Shyamalan, director of “The Sixth Sense.” These art-embellished, elaborate gardens were created with an eye for low maintenance. And here, the formal blends with informal. Come learn what you can do.

Linden Hill Gardens and Nursery
Linden Hill is a nursery specializing in unusual plants and themed display gardens. Visitors can enjoy the gardens, shop for unusual plants with a special tour discount of 20%, and shop in the country gift shop. Owner and garden designer Jerry Fritz, who appeared on the Martha Stewart Show, will greet us.

Lunch in historic Doylestown
From the corner of State Street and Main Street, there are many restaurants, cafes and delis within two blocks in any direction. They represent a variety of cuisines and prices.

Fordhook Farm, Doylestown
Fordhook Farm is the home of W. Atlee Burpee and the birthplace of the Burpee Company. Since 1888, this historical farm has been a world-renowned plant development facility and remains in the forefront of plant trialing and research. Plus, its display and research gardens are gorgeous. Tour-takers will enjoy a 1-hour guided tour with Sharon Kaszan, Trials Manager, or her assistant, for an overview of all gardens or wander on your own with a map of the gardens.

The diversity of gardens include: sun and shade annual/perennial gardens intermixed with sculpture, mixed shrub/grass/perennial borders, stream-side garden, raised bed potager, gardens with Heronswood plants, trials gardens and fields. Maps (and plant list if available) will be provided at no charge.
