Rhode Island Wild Plant Society Events
ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED for all events with fees (and sometimes for those without fees). Register: 401-789-7497 or office@riwps.org 48 hours before walk. Fee. Make payment 48 hours ahead. Send check to RIWPS, PO Box 414, Exeter, RI 02822. Registered participants receive directions and details by e-mail or telephone. Walks rated easy, moderate, or strenuous for healthy people of average physical ability. Leaders are volunteers with no special training in first aid; participants assume full responsibility for their own well being. CANCELLATION:notify us asap so we may notify those on waiting list. DRESS AND EQUIPMENT: Usually long pants and sturdy shoes and socks (poison ivy, briers, ticks). Equipment might include insect repellent, hat, rubber boots, field guides, hand lens, small notebook, and/or hiking stick.
March 1 - Deadline for Grant Application
$500 grant to aid individuals in study of wild plants and their habitats. To qualify you must be an educator, a member of a Rhode Island botanical or environmental association or student in field related to botany or environmental studies. Grant includes 1-year membership to RIWPS. Open to Rhode Island residents or non-residents at RI educational institution. March 6 - Unsung Native Shrubs 9:30-Noon
Weather date: Jan. 30. Lecture and Field Trip. Leader: Dr. Susan Gordon shows how to identify native shrubs. Indoors and in Botanic Garden and North Woods.
Bring hand lens if you have one. Medium. Fee.
March 13 - Annual Meeting 1
Business meeting & induction of new officers and Board of Directors. Refreshments & fellowship. Guest speaker Thomas J. Rawinski, U.S. Forest Service botanist, on Forests in Transition: Conservation Challenges for the Future. Discusses discuss forest health and biodiversity conservation issues in Rhode Island and what you can do. Free and open to public.

April 10 - Field Trip: Tree ID in Spring 10-Noon
Weather date: Sun. April 11, 1-3. Identify natives, invasives and cultivars by their leaves, buds, and flowers. In northwest corner of state in Scituate reservoir watershed. Paul Dolan is enthusiastic forester and teacher. Easy.Fee.
April 17 - Film: A Sense of Wonder 2
Compelling story of Rachel Carson's appreciation of natural world and her fight to protect it. Courtesy of The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island and North Kingstown Free Library. Movie followed by discussion. No registration necessary. Free
