February 11 - Grafting Techniques for Ornamental Trees 9-4
Jack Alexander, Arboretum plant propagator. Learn methods of grafting, make graft unions using deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. (Simple aftercare will be required until planting out in late spring.) If you own pruning shears or grafting knife, bring them. You must sign an assumption-of-risk-and-release form in order to practice the techniques taught in class. Fee, Dana Greenhouses
February 15 - The Birds and The Trees 7-8:30
Photographer, field biologist Brooks Matthewson, illustrates connections between avian and plant life, particularly the way birds use urban oases like the Arboretum during migrations. February 28 - Growing Potential: Gardening Behind Bars 7-8:30
James Jiler, former Director of Greenhouse Project, Horticultural Society of New York, a horticultural job training program for inmates at NYC's Rikers Island prison, author Doing Time in the Garden, speaks on re-directing prisoners’ lives through horticulture. February 29 - Phytotechnologies: A Productive Planting Approach 6
Presenters: Niall Kirkwood, Professor of Landscape Architecture and Technology, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Kate Kennen, Principal, Kennen Landscape Architecture. Topic: Phytotechnology, the ability of plants to uptake and remove contaminates from soil. Presentation covers fundamentals of phytotechnology, advantages and limits of plant-based cleanup, and implications for future integration in design and planning.
